We created OnlinePMTools.com while hunting for the best online project management tools available to help run a small Web-based business. We quickly ran into two harsh truths: There are metric-ton loads of tools on the market today, both free and paid, along with a general lack of good user reviews for so many of them. Sure there are lots of head to head comparisons of two or three tools, but who has time to dig them all up? How could we decide short of reading hundreds of text pages, running dozens of free trials and hoping for the best?

We’re hoping to create a directory of online project management tools, and pair the list with high-quality user reviews. The end result, if we don’t fall flat on our faces, should help anyone looking for a great tool save time and feel more confident in their eventual selection.

“But wait!” you say, “There already are directories out there!” Fair point. That said, none of the sites we came across really spoke our language. They were either pure listings with no reviews, or pure reviews with minimal references to alternative tools. Or, in some cases, they were just outdated. So, why OnlinePMTools then?

  • It’s Comprehensive* and Fresh: Don’t you hate searching high and low for lists and product reviews, only to discover later that they were published two years back and have been superseded by new versions ? Us too. We hope to build out a constantly evolving and eventually comprehensive* list of online PM tools, both adding and retiring tools as we go. While we’ll keep our eye out, help us by suggesting a new tool! (*as of March 2009 we have a “starter” list up…we’re building as fast as we can.)
  • It’s All About User Reviews: Hearing straight from people and companies who have used the tools is the best way to get a feel for quality and fit for your own needs. For every tool we list, we hope to accumulate a wealth of useful user reviews and ratings, and provide an aggregate ranking on our home page.
